  2-Azetidinones were smoothly transformed to unsaturated ketones through the ring opening of activated 2-azetidinone by phosphonate stabilized carbanion and subsequent Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons olefination of the resulting β-ketophosphonates with aldehydes.
