    The present invention relates to a binuclear ruthenium complex dye having a substituted bipyridyl group and represented by the general formula (1): wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 each independently represents a linear or branched alkyl group having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, with the proviso that at least one of R1 and R2 represents a linear or branched alkyl group having 10 to 30 carbon atoms and at least one of R3 and R4 represents a linear or branched alkyl group having 10 to 30 carbon atoms; X represents a counter ion; n represents a number of the counter ions needed to neutralize a charge of the complex; and proton(s) (H+) of one or more carboxyl groups (-COOH) may dissociate.

    We have synthesised Ru(H2-dcbpy)(N,N′-Y2-bpy)(NCS)2 dyes (where N = 4, 5; Y = F, Cl, Br; N is the position on the bipyridyl ring where the halogen substituent is located) for dye-sensitised solar cells.     Gold nanoparticles electrostatically stabilized with negatively charged ruthenium complexes were individually monitored based on their characteristic plasmon bands, by means of hyperspectral dark field microscopy. Very strong SERS enhancements were observed for the isolated gold nanoparticles at exciting wavelengths in resonance with the surface plasmon band, using confocal Raman microscopy, revealing a contrasting behaviour between the agglomerated and non-agglomerated systems. The results highlighted the relevant role played by the surface enhanced resonance Raman mechanisms (SERRS) in isolated nanoparticles, more than compensating for the lack of local hot spots, in relation to the agglomerated systems.
