Structural studies on a range of Ag+ and Pb2+ complexes of N-allyl and N-butenyl lariat ethers are reported. In the case of smaller ligands with allyl side arms (L=N-allylaza-15-crown-5 and N-azaallyl-18-crown-6), coordination polymers of type [Ag(L)]+∞ exhibiting Ag+⋯π interactions are observed. The present invention is related to a hydrocarbon oxidation process. The process comprises bringing one or more hydrocarbons into contact with a source of oxygen in the presence of a radical initiator and a catalyst. The catalyst comprises an organic metal complex located on a catalyst support, and is obtained by partial decomposition of the organic metal complex. For example, the process can be used to produce dimethyl carbonate from dimethoxy methane. The invention is also related to a partially decomposed catalyst that comprises a silica support and an organic metal complex, wherein at least 5% of the organic compound remains in the catalyst. The organic metal complex comprises an organic compound and a metal-based compound wherein the metal is selected from copper, nickel, and combinations thereof. The invention is also related to a process for manufacturing of a catalyst comprising mixing L-arginine, a Cu-based compound, water, and optionally another metal-based compound to form a solution; impregnating the solution onto a silica support to form a catalyst precursor; and partially decomposing the L-arginine to form the catalyst so that at least 5% of L-arginine remains in the catalyst.

This invention relates to novel crown ether compositions which have been given the cognomen "lariat ethers". They have been designed with one or more arms bearing neutral donor groups capable of interacting with a complexed metal ion and thereby affording enhanced cation binding compared to simple crown ethers. Evidence of enhanced cation binding has been obtained and the compounds have also shown utility as phase transfer catalysts.
Processes comprising: (i) providing a reactant selected from the group consisting of primary alcohols, secondary alcohols, aldehydes, ketones and mixtures thereof; and (ii) reacting the reactant with hydrogen and a nitrogen compound selected from the group consisting of ammonia, primary amines, secondary amines and mixtures thereof, in the presence of a catalyst comprising a zirconium dioxide- and nickel-containing catalytically active composition, to form an amine; wherein the catalytically active composition, prior to reduction with hydrogen, comprises oxygen compounds of zirconium, copper, and nickel, and one or more oxygen compounds of one or more metals selected from the group consisting of Sb, Pb, Bi, and In.
