    Reactions of resorcinol and its chlorinated derivatives with monochloramine: Identification of intermediates and products

    AbstractAn investigation of the reaction of resorcinol (compound 1) and its chlorinated derivatives 4‐chlororesorcinol (compound 4), 4,6‐dichlororesorcinol (compound 5), and 2,4,6‐trichlororesorcinol (compound 2) with monochloramine (NH2Cl) in ether and aqueous solution (pH 7) is reported. NH2Cl reacted with compounds 1, 2, 4, and 5 to give the pentachloro intermediate, 2,2,4,4,6‐pentachloro‐5‐cyclohexen‐1,3‐dione (compound 3), which underwent ring opening with H2O and loss of CO2 in the presence of NH2Cl to produce the following: 1,1,3,5,5‐pentachloro‐3‐penten‐2‐one (compound 6), 1,1,1,3,5,5‐hexachloro‐3‐penten‐2‐one (compound 7), and 1,1,3,5,5,5‐hexachloro‐3‐penten‐2‐one (compound 8). Compound 6 reacted further with NH2Cl to give compounds 7 and 8; in the presence of NH2Cl, compound 7 rearranged to compound 8. Mechanisms for the preceding reactions are analyzed in detail. Another aspect of the investigation involved a determination of the amounts of chloroform, CHCl3, which is produced from compound 3 with NH2Cl (4%) and with NaOCl (50%). The low production of CHCl3 from compound 3 and NH2Cl is discussed in connection with the probable reactions of compounds 7 and 8 with NH2Cl and H2O.

    The present invention is directed to a process for the preparation of (meth)acrylates of halogenated alcohols by direct esterification of said alcohols with (meth)acrylic acid (chloride) wherein at least 2,6-substituted pyridine derivative is used as a polymerization inhibitor at room temperature or lower. Suitable at least 2,6-substituted pyridine derivatives are 2,6-lutidine, 2,4,6-collidine or 2,6-di-tert.butyl-4-methyl pyridine. With the halogenated (meth)acrylate esters prepared with the process according to the invention, very pure homo- and copolymers can be prepared, resulting in polymers having a low optical loss of 0.1 dB/cm or lower at 1300 nm and lower than 0.4 dB/cm at 1550 nm.

    A medical adhesive composition comprising, based upon the total weight of the composition, from about 50 wt. % to about 99.9 wt. % of one or more α-cyanoacrylate monomers and from about 0.1 wt. % to about 5 wt. % of one or more non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Suitable NSAIDs include ibuprofen and acetaminophen. The resulting compositions provide enhances fibroblast proliferation and reduced cytotoxicity compared to compositions that do not contain NSAID.

    A multistage process for preparing interfacially polymerized polyamide reverse osmosis membranes on a microporous support is disclosed. the process involves applying a solution containing from 1 to 10 wt % of an aromatic diamine having 1 or 2 aromatic rings and 2 to 3 amino groups in a first solvent to the microporous substrate. Then a solution of an aromatic or cyclophatic acyl chloride having 1 or 2 rings and 2.2 to 4 acyl chloride groups in a solvent immiscible with the first solvent is applied to the microporous substrate. Then a solution of different acyl chlorides is applied to the substrate. The acyl chlorides in this second solution can have 2 to 4 acyl chloride groups attached to an aliphatic group of 6 to 12 carbon atoms or an aromatic or cycloaliphatic group having 1 or 2 rings and containing 8 to 14 carbon atoms. Also suitable for the second treatment are bis chloroformates.
