An enzymatic synthesis of nucleosides selectively deuterated in the deoxyribose ring is described. The method is illustrated with the synthesis of 2'-deoxyguanosine-2',2'-d/sub 2/ and thymidine-2',2'-d/sub 2/. The availability of such labeled nucleosides enables the motional characteristics of the deoxyribose ring to be investigated with deuteriumNMR spectroscopy in solution and the solid state.
