N-oxides are an interesting class of experimental anticancer and antibacterial agents. Analogs with 18O incorporated into the N-oxide group may offer useful mechanistic tools. We describe the use of H218OF·CH3CN in a fast, readily executed and high-yielding preparation of 1,2,4-benzotriazine 1,4-dioxides containing an 18O-label at the 4-oxide position.
Despite many efforts, one of the smallest heterocycles containing two nitrogen atoms, pyridazine, could not be converted to its N,N-dioxide (see, however, Nakadate et al. Chem. Pharm. Bull. 1970, 18, 1211–1218). HOF·CH3CN, made easily from diluted fluorine, was able to accomplish this task in a fast reaction with good yields.

A general route for the preparation of selenones (R2SeO2) is presented. This task is achieved through the quick and high-yielding reaction of selenides (R2Se) with HOF·CH3CN. The reaction tolerates some elusive electron-deficient and sterically hindered selenides. Some mechanistic aspects are also investigated and discussed.

For the first time a range of fused oligothiophenes was oxidized with use of the HOF·CH3CN complex by transferring one or more sulfur atoms to sulfonyl groups under very mild conditions. These materials exhibit considerable red-shift absorptions in the UV/visible relative to the parent compounds.
