catalyst HBTM-2 generates 3-fluoro-β-lactams with high enantio- and diastereoselectivity. These reactive compounds are opened with alcohols or amines to produce the corresponding α-fluoro-β-amino acid derivatives in moderate yields.
Complementary chemistry! α‐Isocupreine (α‐ICPN) was synthesized for the first time in one step fromquinine by treatment with CF3SO3H (see scheme). This compound serves as an enantiocomplementarycatalyst to β‐isocupreidine (β‐ICD) in the Morita–Baylis–Hillman reaction.

The aza-MBH reaction of imines 1 and beta-naphthyl acrylate 2 in the presence of C-6' modified beta-isocupreidine derivative 1c (0.1 equiv) and beta-naphthol 5 (0.1 equiv) afforded the corresponding (3S)-aza-MBH adducts 4 in high yield and excellent enantiomeric excess.
