Investigation of the Complete Miscibility of Disc-rod Mesogens in the Nematic Phase

The synthesis and the phase behaviour of nematic dimers, built up from rod and disc shaped mesogens, separated by extended spacers is described. Miscibility studies with the rod as well as disc shaped mesogens were performed and OPM data of contact samples and the results of detailed DSC experiments of mixtures are presented. Full miscibility in the nematic phase was observed.

We have prepared a new discotic nematogen, bearing one functional tail and five methoxy substituents. The corresponding side chain polymers, prepared via a polymer analogous esterification reaction, exhibited ND phases from 50 °C until degradation above 200 °C. Addition of equimolar amounts of various trinitrofluorenone-based acceptors to the mesogen resulted in the formation of charge transfer complexes
Mixtures of disc-shaped and rod-shaped mesogens with chiral components

A novel mesogen has been synthesised, that not only combines two one disc-shaped and rod-shaped mesogens, but also includes a chiral group in the centre of the molecule. A protection and selective deprotection procedure allows the introduction of the chiral group in the central linking group of the mesogen. However, using this versatile procedure, a variety of other groups can be introduced selectively into the mesogen. The chiral group induces the formation of a cholesteric phase. Interestingly, the N* mesophase is miscible with the nematic phases of the precursor discs and rods. This study provides further evidence for the miscibility of discs and rods in a (chiral) nematic phase.
Hierarchical organisation in shape-amphiphilic liquid crystals

Shape-amphiphilic liquid crystals offer a route towards complex assemblies at the difficult 10 nanometer length scale. We present the preparation and mesomorphic characterisation of three novel shape amphiphiles based on azobenzenes. Their mesophases range from a simple nematic to complex lamellar phases of alternating layers of discotic and calamitic mesogens. In all smectic phases, the discotic and calamitic moieties are nanophase separated. As the different sub-layers start to tilt and/or display in-layer order independently, the mesophase assignment becomes more complex. Using temperature dependent X-ray diffraction we studied their characteristics.
