  In a polymerization process for the preparation of a polymer material in which one monomer is acrylic acid or methacrylic acid and the other monomer or monomers have acid labile groups being attached thereto and the polymerization is carried out using a chain transfer agent (RAFT) and a compatible first solvent, the improvement which comprises using a base material to prevent the degradation of the acid labile groups, and thereafter removing the base material from the polymer material thus formed.
