Treatment of diphenyl and dibenzyl diselenides with aliphatic and aromatic acid chlorides in the presence of Zn/AlCl3 affords selenol esters. Availability, low costs, and lack of toxicity of the catalysts, simple reaction work-up, and high yields under relatively mild condition are distinct advantages of this method.

A facile, efficient, and convenient procedure has been developed for the direct conversion of selenol esters into the corresponding diselenides in the presence of elemental iodine at room temperature.
