    Select metal salts of mono and di aromatic sulfonic acids and aliphatic sulfonic acids are effective latent acid catalysts in coating compositions capable of acid catalyzed crosslinking and provide coating compositions with lower cure temperature and quicker cure times than encountered with conventional sulfonic acid catalysts, have excellent storage stability and avoid drawbacks of epoxy and amine blocked sulfonic acid catalysts.

    A paint resin composition which does not appreciably attack an old coated film or a substrate to be coated, said composition consisting essentially of (A) a copolymer having a glass transition point of from -30°C to +50°C, a number average molecular weight of from 4,000 to 20,000 and a weight average molecular weight/ number average molecular weight ratio of from 1.8 to 10 and obtained by copolymerizing (a-1) 1 to 50% by weight of a vinyl monomer having a hydroxyl group, (a-2) 0 to 5% by weight of a vinyl monomer having a carboxyl group, (a-3) 0 to 80% by weight of a polyester resin having a copolymerizable unsaturated bond, (a-4) 10 to 80% by weight of a vinyl monomer having a side-chain alkyl group with 4 to 8 carbon atoms, and (a-5) 4 to 49% by weight of another vinyl monomer copolymerizable with the monomers (a-1) to (a-4), the total proportion of these monomers being 100% by weight, in the presence of a radical initiator in a nonpolar organic solvent having an aniline point of 7 to 70°C, (B) a polyisocyanate containing an isocyanurate ring and being soluble in a nonpolar organic solvent having an aniline point to from 7 to 70°C, said polyisocyante being obtained by reacting at least one diisocyanate compound selected from alkylene diisocyanates having 2 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkylene moiety, cyclo-alkylene diisocyanates having 6 to 8 carbon atoms in the cycloalkylene moiety and aralkylene diisocyantes having 7 to 8 carbon atoms in the aralkylene moiety with a diol having 10 to 40 carbon atoms, and (C) a nonpolar organic solvent, the OHINCO equivalent ratio of the copolymer (A) to the polyisocyanate (B) being from 1:0.2 to 1:1.5.

    Disclosed are a resin composition for artificial marble comprising: (I) an unsaturated polyester obtained by using a divalent alcohol containing hydrogenated bisphenol A as an essential component and an α,β-ethylenic unsaturated dibasic acid; (II) a copolymerizable monomer; (III) an unsaturated alcohol which can be copolymerized with the unsaturated polyester (I) and the copolymerizable monomer (II); and (IV) a low molecular weight styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer having a molar ratio of styrene to maleic anhydride being 3:1 to 7:1 and a number average molecular weight of less than 5,000,    wherein the unsaturated alcohol (III) is used in such an amount that the weight ratio of the unsaturated alcohol (III) to the copolymerizable monomer (II) is 1:99 to 50:50, the weight ratio of the unsaturated polyester (I) to (the copolymerizable monomer (II) + the unsaturated alcohol (III)) is 30:70 to 70:30, and the weight ratio of the styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (IV) to (the unsaturated polyester (I) + the copolymerizable monomer (II) + the unsaturated alcohol (III)) is 10:90 to 40:60, a bulk molding compound or sheet molding compound using the same, and a process for preparing artificial marble using the same.

    A combination of chemicals suitable for extending pot life and shortening cure time of a pot mix of a thermosetting composition is disclosed. The combination of chemicals includes a catalyst, such as, dibutyl tin dilaurate; carboxylic or sulfonic acid; and an extender compound, such as 2,4 pentanedione. The combination is generally included in a polymeric component of the urethane composition. The extended pot life provides the user with longer open time during which to efficiently apply a coating of the pot mix over a wide variety of substrate surfaces while still producing coatings that cure quickly upon application.

    The present invention is directed to a low VOC ultra high solids thermosetting coating composition. A polymeric component of the composition includes a low molecular weight polymer polymerized from a monomer mixture containing less than 45 percent by weight of at least one active hydrogen containing monomer. The polymerization takes place in the presence of a reactive diluent. By including the reactive diluent in the polymeric component of the composition, the amount of solvent used in the composition can be substantially reduced, while still providing a pot mix of the composition with a viscosity sufficient to permit efficient coating application. The coatings from the composition are durable; glossy; impact and solvent resistant; and adherent to a wide variety of substrates, such as automobile bumpers, road surfaces and office equipment. The surface of these coatings when subjected to scuffing or surface marring action can be substantially restored to its original condition by simply buffing or polishing the marred or scuffed surface. The invention is also directed to include a combination of chemicals in the thermosetting composition containing an isocyanate cross linking component. Such a combination simultaneously increases the pot life of the pot mix while decreasing the drying time of a coating from the pot mix at ambient temperature over a wide variety of substrate surfaces.
