The air bag gas generating composition according to the present invention comprises, as active components, (1) biscarbamoylhydrazine as a gas generating base, (2) an oxohalogen acid salt as an oxidizing agent, (3) a nitrate as an oxidizing agent, and (4) a burning catalyst. The air bag gas generating composition according to the present invention has advantageous characteristics of appropriate burning performance, low burning temperature, low concentration of the toxic components such as CO and NOx in the gas generated by the combustion, a low concentration of the suspended particulate matter released, good heat stability, and remarkably higher safety than conventional azide-based and azide-free gas generating compositions.
