  Verfahren zur Herstellung von 1-Hydroxi-3-oxapentan-1,2,4,5-tetracarbonsäure und 3,6-Dioxa-octan-1,2,4,5,7,8-hexacarbonsäure, deren Salzen und deren Mischungen, wobei man ohne Zwischenisolierung a) 1 Mol Maleinsäureanhydrid mit 0.2 bis 1.5 Mol Wasserstoffperoxid in Gegenwart von Epoxidations-Katalysatoren epoxidiert, b) das dabei erhaltene Reaktionsgemisch durch Erhitzen hydrolysiert, c) nach Zugabe von Erdalkali- oder Zinksalzen als Katalysator bei pH Werten von 10 bis 14 auf 60 bis 110°C erhitzt und dann d) aus der so erhaltenen Lösung die oben genannten Endprodukte isoliert. Bei diesem Eintopfverfahren entfällt der separate Einsatz von teurer Weinsäure und man erhält die genannten Endprodukte in einer vereinfachten Verfahrensweise.

  There is disclosed herein improved processes for the preparation of mixtures of alkali metal salts of 1-hydroxy-3-oxa-1,2,4,5-pentane tetracarboxylate and alkali metal salts of 3,6-dioxa-1,2,4,5,7,8-octane hexacarboxylate wherein D,L-tartaric acid is employed and recovered by lowering the pH of the reaction median to within the range of from about 7 to about 9.5. At the reduced pH calcium D,L-tartrate precipitates and is easily separated. The recovered tartrate may be recycled to the synthesis reaction to prepare further product.

  There is disclosed an improved process for preparing 1-hydroxy-3-oxa-1,2,4,5-pentane tetracarboxylic acid and 3,6-dioxa-1,2,4,5,7,8-octane hexacarboxylic acid wherein the unreacted starting acids are recovered in more desirable crystal habit. The acids are precipitated in salt form by lowering the pH of the reaction product to a range of from 4 to below 6 stepwise. The pH is lowered to above 6 in the first step and then relatively rapdily reduced to the desired level in the second step.
