    In a process for hydrogenating at least one organic compound, the organic compound or compounds is/are brought into contact with a hydrogen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst which comprises, as active metal, ruthenium either alone or together with at least one further metal of transition group I, VII or VIII of the Periodic Table applied to a support material based on amorphons silicon dioxide and is obtainable by: i) a single or multiple treatment of a support material based on amorphous silicon dioxide with a halogen-free aqueous solution of a low molecular weight ruthenium compound and subsequent drying of the treated support material at below 200° C., ii) reduction of the solid obtained in i) by means of hydrogen at from 100 to 350° C., with step ii) being carried out directly after step i).

    A polyamide-type copolymer, a process of producing the same and use of the same in a thin layer forming agent. In order to provide a polyamide-type copolymer suitable for producing an alignment layer in an SBE type display element with high transparency, adhesion, pretilt angle etc, the present invention provides processes of producing a block copolymer type polyamic acid, a polyimide block copolymer, a polyimide-polyamic acid block copolymer and a liquid crystal alignment layer wherein, in separate steps, first and second prepolymers comprising polyamic acid prepolymers or polyamide prepolymers are prepared and subsequently reacted together, and if necessary, imidised. The invention also provides a thin layer forming agent having a first polyimide-type block and a second polyimide-type block bonded to the first polyimide-type block and having a different structure from the first polyimide type block.

    This invention provides a process for preparing cyclohexanedimethanol comprising hydrogenating a cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid dialkyl ester by a fixed-bed continuous reaction in the presence of a preformed copper-containing catalyst under the conditions of reaction temperature of 200 to 280°C, hydrogen pressure of 185 to 300 kgf/cm2 and hydrogen gas feed rate of 1 to 40 cm/s in terms of superficial linear velocity, the cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid dialkyl ester being prepared, typically, by ring hydrogenating of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid dialkyl ester in the presence of a preformed supported ruthenium catalyst by a fixed-bed continuous reaction.
