    The claimed invention provides a novel compound not having been studied before, that is, a diene carboxylate anion that contains a specific structure, and a salt thereof. The claimed invention further provides a diene carboxylate anion and a salt thereof, especially a metal salt thereof, which are easily soluble in general organic solvents, reactive diluents, and resins, may be in a liquid state at normal temperature depending on the structure, and have high polymerizability. Polymerization/curing of these produces a resin to which many ionic bonds and a metal are introduced, providing various properties such as hardness, scratch resistance, anti-fingerprint property, gas-barrier property, water vapor barrier property, oxygen absorption property, ultraviolet protection, infrared protection, color development and coloring, high refractive index, adhesion, various catalytic abilities, fluorescence ability and light-emitting ability, optical amplification, dispersibility, and antistatic properties. In addition, the anion and the salt can be used for raw materials for functional fine particles and for metal nanoparticle composites, and also for MOD materials. The claimed invention also provides an advantageous method for producing the diene carboxylate anion and the salt thereof.

    Processes for producing an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid, such as acrylic acid, or a salt thereof, using solid promoters are disclosed. The starting material either is a metallalactone or comprises an olefin and carbon dioxide. The solid promoters can be certain solid oxides, mixed oxides, and clays, illustrative examples of which can include alumina, zirconia, magnesia, magnesium aluminate, sepiolite, and similar materials.

    This disclosure provides for routes of synthesis of α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids and their salts, including acrylic acid. For example, disclosed is a process for producing an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid or its salt, comprising: (1) contacting a group 8-11 transition metal precursor, an olefin, carbon dioxide, a diluent, and a sulfur oxoacid anion-substituted polyaromatic resin or a phosphorus oxoacid anion-substituted polyaromatic resin with associated metal cations to provide a mixture; and (2) applying reaction conditions to the mixture suitable to produce the α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid or a salt thereof. Methods of regenerating the polyaromatic resin with associated metal cations are described.

    Disclosed is a continuous process for producing α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids or salts thereof, comprising: 1) in a first stage, contacting (a) a transition metal precursor compound comprising at least one first ligand, (b) optionally, at least one second ligand, (c) an olefin, (d) carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), and (e) a diluent to form a first composition; 2) in a second stage, contacting a polyanionic solid with the first composition to form a second composition; and 3) in a third stage, (a) contacting the second composition with a polar solvent to release a metal salt of an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid and form a reacted solid. Methods of regenerating the polyanionic solid are described.
