    The present application are highly reproducible poly(propylene glycol fumarate) compositions having a controlled end group ratio and range of molecular weights with minimal low molecular weight and excessively high molecular weight fractions, and methods for their manufacture. These compositions, having a preferred weight average molecular weight (Mw) of between about 500 and 3000 and a number average molecular weight (Mn) of between about 300 and 2000, are especially useful in biomedical applications such as in bone cements and tissue implants or glues. In the preferred embodiment, the polymer is prepared from propylene glycol (PG) and fumaric acid (FA) by one of three methods: melt polymerization using non-volatile starting materials; step polymerization where in each step the polymer is increased by the addition of two groups to the polymer ends; or under reaction conditions maintained so that only the condensation byproduct, water, is removed during the reaction, thereby keeping the ratio between PG and FA constant. Variations of the PPF polymers include polymers with increased sensitivity to hydrolysis through incorporation of lactic acid groups into the polymer and polymers formed from maleic acid, maleic anhydride, citraconic acid or citraconic anhydride.

    A process for producing a microporous oil sorbent polymer comprising the steps of: dissolving a polyunsaturated monomer in a silicone organic solvent to provide a monomer mixture containing more than 90% by weight polyunsaturated monomer; polymerizing said monomers by precipitation polymerization, under an inert atmosphere to precipitate microporous, micro-particles in the form of micro-particles, agglomerates and aggregates having a bulk density of about 0.02 gm/cm3 to about 0.01 gm/cm3 and capable of adsorbing at least about 20 % by weight organic materials based on the total weight of polymer plus adsorbed organic material.

    The present invention is directed to a porous polymer microparticle, in the form of broken spheres, open to a porous oleophilic interior surface area, having a high oil and water absorbency and an apparent bulk density of about 0.008 to about 0.1 grams/cc. The preferred method of the present invention comprises the steps of: dissolving at least one, and preferably at least two, polyunsaturated monomers along with an effective amount of an organic polymerization initiator in a water-immiscible organic solvent to provide a monomer mixture; adding the monomer mixture to an aqueous solution, preferably having an effective amount of a suspension stabilizer dissolved therein, to form an organic/aqueous biphasic liquid system; vigorously agitating the biphasic liquid system at a rate sufficient to cause the water-immiscible organic phase to be suspended as microdroplets in the aqueous phase; continuing vigorous agitating during polymerization of the monomers in the suspended microdroplets to produce a microporous polymer microparticle; and separating the microporous polymer microparticle from the organic solvent to produce a microporous and oil sorbent polymer microparticle having a mean unit diameter of less than about 50 microns and a total sorptive capacity for mineral oil that is at least about 72% by weight, preferably at least about 90% by weight dry polymer basis.
