  A wash solution having a pH of from 7 to 12 comprises at least 0.1 weight percent of one or more cationic surfactants. This wash solution is useful in assays for chlamydial or gonococcal organisms, such as Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae. In particular, it can be used to remove uncomplexed materials from the insolubilized complexes formed between antigen and antibodies.
