    Aldehydes are produced by unmodified rhodium catalyzed hydroformylation process in a homogeneous organic phase using a solution of unmodified rhodium catalyst and an organic acid in a total amount, calculated as acid equivalent, of from greater than 3 moles to 3000 moles of acid per mole of rhodium. The organic acid is selected from: saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids having from 5 to 13 carbon atoms in the molecule; saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acids having from 5 to 13 carbon atoms in the molecule; sulphonic acids having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms in the molecule; and combinations thereof. Use of the process can lead to either a significant increase in conversion without reducing selectivity for the desired aldehyde or a reduction in the specific use of rhodium.

    An industrially advantageous method for producing a high purity terminal olefin is disclosed, comprising the steps of (a) contacting a mixture comprising a terminal olefin represented by formula (1): and one or more corresponding internal olefins as impurities, with a brominating agent in the presence of water or an alcohol, to convert the internal olefin(s) to compound(s) having a higher boiling point than the terminal olefin; and (b) purifying the terminal olefin by distillation from the reaction mixture.

    A continuous process for the production an aldehyde by hydroformylation of an optionally substituted alpha-olefin comprises: providing a hydroformylation zone containing a charge of a liquid reaction medium having dissolved therein a complex rhodium hydroformylation catalyst comprising rhodium in complex combination with carbon monoxide and with a cyclic phosphite having a bridgehead phosphorus atom linked to three oxygen atoms at least two of which form together with the bridgehead phosphorus atom part of a ring; supplying said alpha-olefin to the hydroformylation zone; maintaining temperature and pressure conditions in the hydroformylation zone conducive to hydroformylation of the alpha-olefin; supplying make-up hydrogen and carbon monoxide to the hydroformylation zone; and recovering from the liquid hydroformylation medium a hydroformylation product comprising at least one aldehyde.

    PROBLEM There is provided an industrially advantageous means to obtain a high purity terminal olefin compound (for example, 7-octenal). SOLUTION The method for producing a high purity terminal olefin compound of the present invention comprises a step where a mixture containing a terminal olefin compound represented by the following chemical formula 1: and a corresponding internal olefin compound as an impurity is brought into contact with a brominating agent in the presence of water or an alcohol, to convert the aforementioned internal olefin compound to a compound having a higher boiling point; and a step where the aforementioned terminal olefin compound is purified by distillation from the mixture obtained in the aforementioned step.
