    A nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound represented by the following formula (I): 1 wherein X 1 and X 2 each represent an electron attractive group such as a cyano group; and the rings Z 1 and Z 2 each represent a hydrocarbon ring or a heterocycle (e.g., benzene ring having an electron donative group such as hydroxyl group, an alkoxy group, amino group and an N-substituted amino group, or a condensed ring being a benzene ring condensed with a heterocycle having a nitrogen atom as a hetero atom) is provided. An organic EL device is obtained by allowing an organic layer containing the compound described-above to be interposed between a pair of electrodes. The present invention provides a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound useful as a functional material and a process for producing the same, and an organic EL device using the same.

    The azepine compound capable of emitting a light by light-irradiation or action of an electric field is represented by the following formula (I) or (II): 1 wherein X 1 and X 2 are the same or different, each representing an electron attractive group; R 1 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an aryl group, an aralkyl group, or an alkoxy group; R 2 represents an amino group or an N-substituted amino group, or, in the formula (I), R 2 bonds a carbon atom adjacent to a ring Z to form a ring; and the ring Z represents a hydrocarbon ring which may have a substituent or a heterocycle which may have a substituent. The compound is useful as a functional material, thus, an organic electroluminescence device can be obtained by interposing an organic layer composed of the above compound between a pair of electrodes.

    An organic electroluminescence material is produced by bringing a source (1) containing at least an emission center-forming compound absorptive of a laser beam and defined in the predetermined pattern into contact with targets (2a, 2b) which is transmittable of the laser beam and has at least one function selected from an electron-transporting function and a hole-transporting function, and irradiating with the laser beam from the target (2) side to implant the emission center-forming compound (3) contained in the source (1) into the target (2a). The organic electroluminescence device thus obtained has emission centers in the area corresponding to the pattern of the source. The source may be constituted solely of the emission center-forming compound. The present invention provides an organic EL material susceptible of fine patterning, a process for producing the same, and an organic EL device using the same.

    A process for producing for a material for an organic electroluminescent device having an emission center comprises irradiating a laser beam to implant an emission center-forming compound 3 constituting a source 1 into a target 2 having at least one function selected from an electron-transporting function and a hole-transporting function. According to the process, the laser beam and at least the target are relatively moved with irradiating the beam to form the emission center with a predetermined pattern. Moreover, the source and the target being in contact with each other may be moved relative to the laser beam for forming the emission center with a predetermined pattern. Further, the emission center at an area, corresponding to an interference pattern of an interference light, of the target may be formed by irradiating the interference light of the laser beam.

    An organic electroluminescent device comprises an organic layer between a pair of electrodes. The organic layer (in particular, a hole-transporting layer) comprises a polymer of a vinyl compound represented by the following formula (1): 1 wherein R 1 and R 2 are the same or different, each representing a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group or an alkoxy group. The glass transition temperature of the polymer is about 200 to 250° C., and the polymer has high heat-resistance. Thus, the use of the polymer improves heat resistance of an organic EL device.
