  The addition of Li2MTP [MTPH2 = 2,2'-methylenebis (2,4-di-t-butylphenol)] to a suspension of NbCl5 in toluene in either 1 : I or 2: 1 ratios leads to the formation of a red powdery product from which deep red crystalline NbCl(MTP)(2) (1) can be obtained by sublimation. The structure of 1 was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound is monomeric in the solid State, with a trigonal-bipyramidal NbClO4 core and the chloride ligand in an equatorial position. The reaction of 1 with methyllithium affords yellow NbMe(MTP)(2). (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
