    A method and process for treating leather utilizing selected amphiphilic copolymers is provided. The amphiphilic copolymers are formed from a predominant amount of at least one hydrophobic monomer and a minor amount of at least one copolymerizable hydrophilic monomer. The process may be particularly useful as a one step substitute for conventional retanning and fatliquoring treatment steps.

    This invention is concerned with copolymers derived from (a) one or more monomer selected from (C₁-C₂₄)alkyl methacrylates and (C₁-C₂₄)alkyl acrylates, and (b) one or more monomer selected from hydroxy(C₂-C₆)alkyl methacrylates and hydroxy(C₂-C₆)alkyl acrylates, and wherein the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl groups averages from about 7 to about 12. These polymers are useful as additives to lubricating oils for providing viscosity index improvement, dispersancy and low temperature fluidity properties without adversely affecting fluoropolymer seals and gaskets.
