The present invention is a method of making cross-linked or cross-linkable polyarylenes comprising providing a reaction mixture comprising (a) a first monomer comprising at least two cyclic functional groups (b) a second monomer comprising at least two dienophile functional groups, and heating the reaction mixture to form a polymerized or partially polymerized polyarylene material, wherein at least one of the first or second monomers must comprise at least three functional groups. The cyclic groups in the first monomer are characterized by the presence of two conjugated carbon to carbon double bonds and a leaving group, L, selected from -0-, —S—, —(SO

)—, —N═N—, or —O(CO)—. The present invention is also the partially polymerized reaction product of the above method. Finally, the present invention is also specific difunctional diene monomers useful in such a method.

The present invention is a method of making cross-linked or cross-linkable polyarylenes comprising providing a reaction mixture comprising (a) a first monomer comprising at least two cyclic functional groups (b) a second monomer comprising at least two dienophile functional groups, and heating the reaction mixture to form a polymerized or partially polymerized polyarylene material, wherein at least one of the first or second monomers must comprise at least three functional groups.
