aldehyde and a Michael olefin in the presence of water led to the formation of functionalized phosphine oxides. This approach turned the Lewis base organocatalyzed Morita–Baylis–Hillman reaction into a multicomponent organic transformation to provide rapid access to polyfunctionalized molecules.
