  • Antimicrobial and nuclease activity of mixed polypyridyl ruthenium(II) complexes

    The ruthenium(II) complexes with 2,9-dimethy1-1,10-phenanthroline (dmphen) and terpyridine derivatives have been synthesized and screened for their antimicrobial potency. The interaction of these complexes with Herring Sperm DNA was investigated by thermal denaturation, viscosity measurements, gel electrophoresis and spectrophotometric methods. The results indicate that the complexes bound to DNA via partial intercalative mode. The salt-dependent binding of these complexes has been determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometric titration. The contribution of the non-electrostatic binding free energy (Delta G(t)(o)) to the total binding free energy change (Delta G(o)) is found to be similar to 88% at [Na+] =0.075 M. The large value suggests that the stabilization of the DNA binding is mostly due to the contribution of non-electrostatic process. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    The novel octahedral copper(II) complexes with the second generation fluoroquinolone, norfloxacin and terpyridine derivatives were prepared and characterized. The antimicrobial efficiency of the complexes were tested on five different microorganisms and showed good biological activity. Viscosity measurement and absorption titration were employed to determine the mode of binding of complexes with DNA whereas the cleavage efficacy of the complexes towards pUC19 DNA was determined by electrophoresis in presence of ethidium bromide. SOD mimic behaviour was actively sought for clinical and mechanistic purposes under a nonenzymatic system (NBT/NADH/PMS), and was found to have good antioxidant activity. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V.     A set of 4′-substituted 2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridines has been synthesized in a one-pot procedure under environmentally friendly reaction conditions using PEG and aqueous ammonia as solvents. This procedure features a short synthetic route, short reaction times, easy work-up, and good yields in comparison to conventional methods. The crystallographic data reveal the influence of the 4′-aryl substituent on the molecular structure and π-stacking behavior of the respective terpyridines.
