    Fatty acid-derived ionic liquids as renewable lubricant additives: Effect of chain length and unsaturation

    Fatty acid-derived ionic liquids (FAILs) are synthesized and then demonstrated as the environmentally-friendly additive to mineral lube base oil for enhancement of lubrication properties. Unlike most of the conventional ionic liquids, FAILS exhibited good miscibility with non-polar mineral lube base oil. The quaternary structure of tetrabutylammonium (TBA) cation, diffused positive charge on the cationic center due to +I effect of alkyl chains, and the alkyl chain of fatty acid anion collectively facilitates the miscibility of FAILS in the mineral lube base oil. Experimental results revealed that 1% FAILs could significantly reduce the friction (16-27%) and wear (9-15%) of lube base oil. The viscosity of these ionic liquids is found to be governed by alkyl chain-length and unsaturation of fatty acid anions, and it exhibited a linear correlation with the coefficient of friction. The elemental mapping of worn surfaces on aluminium disc suggested the formation of ionic liquids-derived tribochemical film, which is accounted for protection of tribo-interfaces to reduce the wear and friction. The FAILs being halogen-free, environment-friendly, having an excellent affinity towards engineering surfaces, and good miscibility with non-polar hydrocarbon lubricants, promised the immense potential for tribological applications.     Highly versatile composite fine particles that can coexist with a wide variety of other components, a dispersion thereof, and a method of producing such a dispersion. Furthermore, by using these composite fine particles, there are also provided a high-quality ink jet recording material and a method of producing this ink jet recording material. Composite fine particles, which include cationic fine particles that exhibit a positive zeta potential when dispersed within water to form a dispersion and an anionic compound that is supported on the surface of the cationic fine particles, wherein the composite fine particles exhibit a negative zeta potential when dispersed within water to form a dispersion, are added to the coating layer of an ink jet recording material.

  • Role of Acid in Precursor Conversion During InP Quantum Dot Synthesis

    We have studied the speciation of P(SiMe3)(3) during the synthesis of colloidal InP quantum dots in the presence of proton sources. Using P-31 NMR spectroscopy, we show H3-nP(SiMe3)(n) formation on exposure of P(SiMe3)(3) to a variety of protic reagents including water, methanol, and carboxylic acid, corroborating observations of P(SiMe3)(3) speciation during the hot injection synthesis of InP QDs. Quantitative UV-vis comparisons between InP growth from P(SiMe3)(3) and HP(SiMe3)(2) show unambiguously that when total H+-content is accounted for, particle size, size dispersity, and concentration are indistinguishable for these two reagents. The dual role of myristic acid in P-Si bond cleavage and as a source of the myristate anion, an essential component of the quantum dot surface, is interrogated using tetrabutylammonium myristate, confirming that it is the protons that are responsible for increased quantum dot polydispersity. Together these data support the existence of a competing acid-catalyzed pathway in the conversion of P(SiMe3)(3) to InP and demonstrate its impact. By preventing a constant solute supply and affecting the concentration of quantum dot surfactant over the course of the reaction, the existence of competing precursor conversion pathways is detrimental to formation of monodisperse colloids, explaining much of the irreproducibility in InP quantum dot syntheses to date.
  • Anthracene-based hetero bisamide chemosensor in fluorescence sensing of monocarboxylates over monocarboxylic acids

    A fluorescent chemosensor 1 with different amide moieties as recognition elements has been designed and synthesised. The recognition behaviour of the chemosensor towards various monocarboxylates and their conjugate acids has been evaluated. Although the sensor 1 shows significant quenching of emission of anthracene in CH3CN, it shows an increase in emission in CHCl3 containing 2% CH3CN upon complexation of aliphatic monocarboxylates. Receptor 1 shows selectivity for acetate, propanoate and dihydrogen phosphate over the other anions studied under different conditions. The binding features have been established by H-1 NMR, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopic methods.
