A highly efficient Bi(OTf)3-catalyzed multicomponent synthesis of arylglycines from readily available starting materials is described. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions and provides a general route to various N-protected arylglycines.

An efficient, iron-catalyzed, three-component synthesis of arylglycines starting from readily available amides, glyoxalates, and arenes or heteroarenes has been developed. This method provides a versatile, atom-economic, and cost-effective route to arylglycines with water as the only byproduct. With carbamates as the amide component, various synthetically useful N-protected arylglycine derivatives
stereoselective three-component reactions are presented. Efficient bismuth- and iron-catalyzed three-component syntheses of α-arylglycines have been developed. These methods provide a general, atom-economic route to various N-protected α-arylglycines starting from readily available amides (or carbamates), glyoxalates, and (hetero)arenes with water as the only by-product. Scope and limitations of bismuth- and
