  The structure of an unusual 1:2 mixture of iso-morphous bromo and chloro derivatives of a 1,5-lactone, 0.34C(6)H(7)BrO(3).0.66C(6)H(7)ClO(3), is reported, together with the absolute configuration of the molecules. The lactone ring adopts a conformation between sofa and half-chair. The crystal structure is stabilized by O-H ... O hydrogen bonds between the hydroxy and carbonyl groups.
