A simple, efficient method for generation of (CO)-C-14 from (BaCO3)-C-14 has been developed. Reduction of (CO2)-C-14 using LiBEt3H gave [C-14]formate in good yield which was treated with cone. H2SO4 to effect dehydration to (CO)-C-14. Through direct attachment of a reaction vessel containing aryl substrate and Pd(0) catalyst, [C-14]carbonylation reactions were performed without the use of a mercury transfer pump. [C-14]Carbonylation reactions using (CO)-C-14 generated in this manner have been shown to proceed in good yield with a variety of substrates.
