A monosilylated Hoveyda–Grubbs ruthenium alkylidene has been prepared and grafted through the NHC ligand to a mesostructured silica, in refluxing toluene or at room temperature, giving two new organic–inorganic hybrid silica materials M2 and M3, respectively.
