A Pd‐catalyzed direct cross‐coupling of twodistinctarylbromides mediated by tBuLi is described. The use of [Pd‐PEPPSI‐IPr] or [Pd‐PEPPSI‐IPent] as catalyst allows for the efficient one‐pot synthesis of unsymmetrical biaryls at room temperature. The key for this selective cross‐coupling is the use of an ortho‐substituted bromide that undergoes lithium–halogen exchange preferentially.
This invention relates to supported activators comprising the product of the combination of an ion-exchange layered silicate, an organoaluminum compound, and a heterocyclic compound, which may be substituted or unsubstituted. This invention further relates to catalyst systems comprising catalyst compounds and such activators, as well as processes to polymerize unsaturated monomers using the supported activators. For the purposes of this patent specification and the claims thereto, the term “activator” is used interchangeably with the term “co-catalyst”, the term “catalyst” refers to a metal compound that when combined with an activator polymerizes olefins, and the term “catalyst system” refers to the combination of a catalyst and an activator with or without a support. The terms “support” or “carrier”, for purposes of this patent specification, are used interchangeably and are any ion-exchange layered silicates.

An olefin polymerization catalyst comprising the following components (A) and (B):
Component (A) : an ion-exchange layered silicate having an acid site of at most -8.2 pKa, the amount of the acid site is equivalent to at least 0.05 mmol/g of 2,6-dimethylpyridine consumed for neutralization; and
Component (B) : a compound of a transition metal belonging to Group 3 to Group 12 of the Periodic Table.

The present invention relates to a method for producing a catalyst component for olefin polymerization, the method including step (3): granulating, by a spray drying, an aqueous slurry of an ion-exchangeable second layered silicate (B) that satisfies that an average particle diameter is 0.03 µm to 0.4 µm, and a Rosin-Rammler distribution constant n determined from a particle size distribution is 1.5 or more; and step (4): bringing the obtained first layered silicate granulated particles (C) into contact with acid to obtain chemically treated ion-exchangeable second layered silicate granulated particles (D).
