Gold-catalyzed synthesis of buta-1,3-dien-2-yl esters by the reaction of propargyl esters with vinylazides is described; the reaction mechanism is postulated to involve a vinyl attack of vinylazides at alkenyl gold carbenes.

Allenes have been efficiently prepared by the reaction of propargylic esters (benzoates, acetates, carbonates) with triorganoindiumcompounds (R 3 In) under palladium catalysis, via an 5 N 2' rearrangement. A convenient gold(III)-catalyzed synthesis of azepines from the intermolecular annulation of propargyl esters and alpha,beta-unsaturated imines is reported (19 examples, 55-95% yield). This formal [4 + 3]-cycloaddition reaction is proposed to proceed via a stepwise process involving intramolecular trapping of an allyl-gold intermediate.

A regiodivergent synthesis of functionalized indene derivatives from a Pt-catalyzed Rautenstrauch reaction of propargyl carbonate is described. A one-pot Rautenstrauch/Tsuji-Trost reaction delivering 2-indanones was realized efficiently using this methodology.
