A mesomorphic compound represented by the following formula (I):
wherein R1 denotes a linear or branched alkyl group having 2 - 16 carbon atoms capable of including one or non-neighboring two methylene groups which can be replaced with -O-, -S-, -CO-, -COO- or -OCO- and capable of including a hydrogen atom which can be replaced with a fluorine atom; A denotes -A1- or -A1-A2-; B2 denotes -B3- or -B3-B4-; A1, A2, B1, B3 and B4 independently denote
wherein Y1 and Y2 independently denote a hydrogen atom, F, Cl, Br, -CH3, -CN or -CF3, with the proviso that B1 can be a single bond; Z1 and Z2 independently denote a single bond, -COO-, -OCO-, -CH20- or -OCH2-; Z3 denotes -O-, -CO-, -COO- or -OCO-; R2, R3 and R4 independently denote a linear or branched alkyl group having 1 - 16 carbon atoms capable of including one or two methylene groups, other than those directly connected to Si, which can be replaced with -O-, -COO- or -OCO- with the proviso that -O- cannot directly be connected to -O-; I and m independently denote 0 or 1 with the proviso that I + m ≠ 0; n is an integer of 1 - 12; and X and Q independently denote CH or N with the proviso that X and Q cannot be N simultaneously. The mesomorphic compound is effective for providing a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition showing an improved low-temperature operation characteristic and a decreased temperature-dependence of response speed.
