    A novel tetranuclear silver(I) cluster, [Ag-2(Himdc)(PPh3)(2)](2) 1 (H(3)imdc = imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid; O<^>N) was obtained by a reaction of the Ag-O bonding precursor [Ag(R-Hpyrrld)](2) (H(2)pyrrld = 2-pyrrolidone-5-carboxylic acid), PPh3 and H(3)mide. The mononuclear complex, [Ag(H(2)imdc)(PPh3)(2)](2), was also formed by the reactions using increased amounts of PPh3.In the solid state, complex I was a "bivalve"-like Ag-4 cluster, while complex 2 showed a supramolecular arrangement of the 4-coordinate AgP2(N<^>O) unit via the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interaction.     Using light-stable dimeric silver(I) carboxylate precursors [Ag(Hpyrrld)]2}n formed with chiral and racemic forms of 2-pyrrolidone-5-carboxylic acid (H2pyrrld) ligand, six novel light-stable, triphenylphosphinesilver(I) complexes consisting of both a hard Lewis base (O atom) and a soft Lewis base (P atom) were prepared, i.e. [Ag2(R-Hpyrrld)2(H2O)(PPh3)2]·H2O (1), [Ag(R-Hpyrrld)(PPh3)2]2 (2), [Ag2(S-Hpyrrld)2(H2O)(PPh3)2]·H2O (3), [Ag(S-Hpyrrld)(PPh3)2]2 (4), [Ag(R,S-Hpyrrld)(PPh3)]2}n (5), and [Ag(R,S-Hpyrrld)(PPh3)2] (6). Their solid-state and solution structures were unequivocally characterized with elemental analysis, TG/DTA, FTIR, X-ray structure analysis, molecular weight measurements in EtOH with the vaporimetric method, solution (1H, 13C, and 31P) NMR, and solid-state 31P CPMAS NMR spectroscopy. Two sets of the enantiomeric complexes were isolated as (1 and 3) and (2 and 4). X-ray crystallography revealed that these complexes possessed different Ag–O bonding modes, depending on the number of PPh3 ligands and the chirality of the Hpyrrld− ligand. The complexes 1–6 behaved as a monomeric species in EtOH and CD2Cl2. The antimicrobial activites by the silver(I) complexes in the water–suspension system against selected bacteria, yeast, and molds, were significantly correlated with the number of coordinating PPh3 ligands per silver(I) atom in the complexes.

    A nanoscale drum-like hexanuclear silver(l) cluster [Ag(pfbt)(PPh3)](6) 1 (Hpfbt = pentafluorobenzenethiol), which showed the arrays of channels based on its self-assembly in the solid, was obtained by the 1: 1 molar-ratio reaction of the insoluble polymeric precursor(infinity)[Ag(pfbt)](2) and PPh3 in chloroform. Synthetic yield and purity of 1 were strongly dependent on the purity of 2. Compound 2 with higher purity was prepared in good yield using light-stable and water-soluble silver(l) carboxylate [Ag(Hpyrrld)](2) (H(2)pyrrld = 2-pyrrolidone-5-carboxylic acid) as the silver(I) source.
