Hydrogenation of 1,4-naphthoquinone (I) using a copper chromite catalyst yields trans-1,4-dihydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene (III), a new product. Similarly, 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (IV) gives two isomeric 1,4-dihydroxy-2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalenes (VII and VIII) in which the hydroxyl groups are trans. At elevated temperatures quinone IV also produces two ac-2-methyl tetralols.
