Synthesis of sterically hindered aromatic dialdehydes

A study was carried out on the formylation of a series of aromatic compounds containing two mesitylene or durene residues [dimesityl (I), dimesitylmethane (II), 1,2-dimesitylethane (III), 1,6-dimesitylhexane (IV), dimesityl sulfide (V), 1,1-dimesitylethylene (VI), 1,1-dimesityl-1-butene (VII), and didurylmethane (VIII)) by the action of dichloromethyl methyl ether (DCM) in the presence of AlCl3 and TiCl4. The corresponding dialdehydes are the major products. The formylation products when the reaction is carried out in the presence of AlCl3 in the case of (I) and (V) contain significant amounts of monoaldehydes, while partial cleavage of the substrates with the formation of products containing only one benzene ring is observed in the case of (II) and (VIII) in addition to formylation.
An efficient synthesis of diarylmethanes via InCl3·4H2O-catalyzed dehydration of electron-rich arenes with trioxane

A facile, efficient and environmentally benign procedure for the synthesis of diarylmethanes via the reaction of arenes with trioxane catalyzed by InCl3 center dot 4H(2)O was developed. The reactions of aromatic compounds bearing electron-donating group proceeded smoothly affording the corresponding diarylmethanes in good to excellent yields. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Use of nitromethane as an electrophilic methylene source for the synthesis of symmetrical dithioacetals and bisarylmethanes has been showcased using Sc(OTf)(3) as a catalyst. The procedure allows straightforward access to the densely functionalized dithioacetals and bisarylmethanes under mild conditions. Additionally, the method has been applied for the synthesis of antimalarial tetramethyl mellotojaponin C and anticancer dimeric phloroglucinol derivative.
