Halo(chloro, bromo)defluorination of perfluorobenzaene and toluene efficiently occurs under the action of appropriate alkali metal halides in the presence of hexaethylguanidinium chloride in catalytic amount. The relative efficiency of halide anions and metal cations in these reactions was established.
