  These compounds have the formula wherein R and R1, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen or alkyl, preferably C1-C4 alkyl, and X, Y and Z are each independently hydrogen, chlorine or fluorine, provided that when R, R' and Z are hydrogen, X and Y are not both hydrogen or both fluorine, and are prepared by reacting (a) an alkyl magnesium halide of formula with a benzophenone of formula wherein Hal is halogen; (b) a compound of formula with a Grignard compound of formula or, when X and Y are the same and Z is hydrogen; (c) 2 mols of a Grignard compound of formula (VIII) with 1 mol of an ester of formula R being a hydrocarbon radical. The compounds are intermediates for the preparation of fungicidal compounds.
