    A pseudorotaxane, a rotaxane and a catenane are provided. The pseudorotaxane includes at least a macrocyclic host molecule, a guest molecule, and a metal ion. The host molecule contains at least a binding unit and an aromatic linking spacer. The guest molecule has at least a recognition unit. The metal ion is used to template the threading of the guest molecule through the macrocycle host molecule by coordinating to a binding pocket formed from the binding unit of the macrocycle and the recognition moiety of the guest molecule. Rotaxanes or catenanes can be synthesized from the pseudorotaxane complexes, with or without the metal template ion in their molecular structures.

    A catalyst comprising (a) a complex of Group 8 to 10 transition metal of the Periodic Table, (b) clay, clay mineral or a ion-exchangeable layered compound, and (c) an amine compound or its adduct with Brφnsted acid; a catalyst comprising (a) a chelate complex of Group 4 to 6 transition metal of the Periodic Table or a complex of Group 8 to 10 transition metal of the Periodic Table, (b) clay, clay mineral or a ion-exchangeable layered compound, and (c) a quaternary ammonium salt; and a catalyst comprising (a) a complex of Group 4 to 6 transition metal of the Periodic Table or a complex of Group 8 to 10 transition metal of the Periodic Table and a co-catalyst component produced by contacting (b) clay, clay mineral or a ion-exchangeable layered compound, (c) an amine compound, its adduct with Brφnsted acid or a quaternary ammonium salt, and (d) an organosilane compound. Since these catalysts show high oligomerization activity of ethylene, α-olefins can be efficiently produced with low costs from ethylene. By using the catalysts, vinyl-terminated, linear α-olefins (oligomers) having a molecular weight of 10000 or less or polyolefins having a molecular weight exceeding 10000 can be also produced efficiently with low costs.

    A process includes periodically or continuously introducing an olefin monomer and periodically or continuously introducing a catalyst system or catalyst system components into a reaction mixture within a reaction system, oligomerizing the olefin monomer within the reaction mixture to form an oligomer product, and periodically or continuously discharging a reaction system effluent comprising the oligomer product from the reaction system. The reaction system includes a total reaction mixture volume and a heat exchanged portion of the reaction system comprising a heat exchanged reaction mixture volume and a total heat exchanged surface area providing indirect contact between the reaction mixture and a heat exchange medium. A ratio of the total heat exchanged surface area to the total reaction mixture volume within the reaction system is in a range from 0.75 in−1 to 5 in−1, and an oligomer product discharge rate from the reaction system is between 1.0 (lb)(hr−1)(gal−1) to 6.0 (lb)(hr−1)(gal−1).

    An olefin polymerization catalyst component is prepared by making a solution of a transition metal complex of a selected tridentate ligand, adsorbing the complex onto a silica or silica-alumina support, and separating the solution from the supported transition metal complex component, which is storage stable. Olefin polymerizations with this component may be carried out with high catalyst productivity using cocatalysts such as trialkylaluminum compounds.
