The oxidation of chlorodithioformates with m -chloroperoxybenzoic acid in dichloromethane at room temperature provides an efficient stereoselective synthesis of ( Z )-sulfines. The expected ( Z )-configuration was confirmed by an X-ray structure determination. The sulfines are reactive dienophiles and react with 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene to give the corresponding dihydrothiopyran- S -oxide.
