  Alpha-halogeno-beta-alanines or the mineral acid salts thereof are produced by hydrolyzing alpha-halogeno-beta--aminopropionitriles or the mineral acid salts thereof with mineral acids. In a preferred embodiment the starting material is obtained by the reaction of an alpha,beta-dihalo- geno-propionitrile or an alpha-halogenoacrylonitrile with ammonia, and is hydrolysed with a mineral acid without prior isolation of the alpha-halogeno-beta-aminopropionitrile therefrom.
