    Use of hydroxyoleic acid and its analogous compounds in the manufacture of drugs. Describes the use of hydroxyoleic acid and its analogs of general formula I: COOH-CHR-(CH2)m-CH=CH-(CH2)n-CH3, in which m and n have, independently, a value of 0-15 and R can be any residue with molecular weight below 200 Da, in the manufacture of drugs that can be used in the treatment of cancer, hypertension, obesity or diseases mediated by alteration of the membrane structure and the consequent regulation of G-proteins or of the receptors coupled to them.

In particular, the present invention relates to a method of preparing biological material for implantation comprising (a) fixation with an aldehyde the biological material and (b) detoxification/anticalcification of the fixed biological material, wherein the detoxification/anticalcification step makes use of a novel class of substances of formula:          NH2- (CH2)n-X     (I) wherein X is COOH, SO3H, PO3H2 and n is an integer from 2 to 6.

    A method of cross-linking a tissue, comprising treating the tissue under effective cross-linking conditions with a fluid comprising a compound comprising P(CH 2 OH) 3 X n , wherein X is selected from C 1 -C 10 carboxyl, sulfonic acid, sulfonic acid salts, C 1 -C 10 alcohol, or halogens, and n is an integer from 0 to 2, inclusive, and all —X and —CH 2 OH groups are bonded to the phosphorus atom. In one embodiment, the compound is &bgr;-(tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphino)proprionic acid (THPP). Also disclosed is a cross-linked biological tissue produced by treating the tissue according to the above method.
