    Aprocess for producing p,p'-biphenol which comprises heating a 4,4'-bis(substituted phenol) at elevated temperatures below the decomposition temperature of p,p'-biphenol in the absence of a catalyst under an inert non-reactive atmosphere for the length of time sufficient to obtain a reaction product containing a substantial amount of p,p'-biphenol while removing the olefin by-product formed and then recovering the p,p'-biphenol product. The 4,4'-bis (substituted phenol) is made by oxidative coupling of a phenol having the formula wherein R, and R2 may be the same or different and is a member selected from the group consisting of alkyl radicals containing from 2 to 10 carbon atoms, aralkyl radicals containing from 8 to 10 carbon atoms and having a β alkyl carbon - hydrogen group, and cyclic alkyl radicals having a /3 alkyl carbon - hydrogen group with oxygen or an oxygen containing gas in the presence of a catalytic quantity of a catalyst selected from the group consisting of alkali metal hydroxides, alkali metal salts of a weak acid, alkaline earth metal hydroxides, alkaline earth metal salts of a weak acid, amine bases, and mixtures of the same at an elevated temperature forthe time necessary to react up to a stoichiometric amount of oxygen with said phenol to form a reaction product containing a substantial amount of 4,4'-bis(2,6,-disubstitutedphenol).

    The present invention provides a polyarylate film comprising 9,9-bis(alkyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene residue and bisphenol residue with a molar ratio of the former of in the range of 0.05 to 1 in which the carboxylic acid component is composed of terephthalic acid residue and isophthalic acid residue, wherein the polyarylate film having good abrasion resistance and heat resistance, being highly transparent and having less incident-angle dependent birefringence can be obtained by solvent casting of a polyarylate solution with an inherent viscosity in the range of 0.25 to 2.50. The film has high abrasion resistance, heat resistance and purity along with being excellent in such optical characteristics as high transparency and low birefringence, which is applicable as molding materials for use in electric, electronic and optical fields and in automobile industry; as insulating materials in electric appliances, power generators, capacitors and interlayer insulators; and as surface coating films as dielectric films for use in transformers, wire coating and capacitors, and substrates for liquid crystal display panel.

    A method for producing 4,4'-biphenol, comprising the steps of: providing serially arranged reaction baths for two or more steps; and carrying out a debutylation reaction of 3,3',5,5'-tetra-t-butyl-4,4'-biphenol sequentially in the presence of an acid catalyst in a reaction solvent by supplying at least one kind of phenol selected from the group consisting of phenol, monoalkylphenols, dialkylphenols, and trialkylphenols, in a proportion of at least 0.5 mole part relative to one mole part of 3,3',5,5'-tetra-t-butyl-4,4'-biphenol, to each reaction bath as a solvent for addition,    wherein the number of carbon atoms of the alkyl groups in the alkylphenols selected from the group consisting of the monoalkylphenols, dialkylphenols, and trialkylphenols, is each independently in the range of 1 to 4, and    wherein a solvent for addition to a reaction bath for the latter step has a smaller average number of alkyl groups than a solvent for addition to a reaction bath for the former step.
