A metal-free electrophilicphosphination reaction has been developed. Electrophilic phosphorus species generated in situ from secondary phosphine oxides and Tf2O smoothly couple with alkynes possessing pendant nucleophiles to afford the corresponding phosphinated cyclization products in good yield. Gold catalysts have been found to catalyze the tandem assembly of arynes and terminal alkynes efficiently in the presence of CuI under mild reaction conditions to provide useful alkynylated biphenyl derivatives.

A highly efficient Pd-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling of various aryl fluorides with terminalalkynes in the presence of LiHMDS was developed. Both unreactive electron-rich fluoroarenes and electron-poor fluoroarenes proceeded smoothly and afforded the corresponding internalalkynes in moderate to excellent yields.

A variety of terminal and internal alkynes were converted regio‐ and stereoselectively into (Z)‐3‐chloroacrylonitriles by treatment with BCl3 in the presence of stoichiometric amounts of imidazolium thiocyanates. These products could be readily functionalized to provide useful building blocks, thus demonstrating the synthetic value of the method. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest initial activation
