(centrosymmetrical) and 6 (planosymmetrical) which were dehydrogenated with dicyanodichlorobenzoquinone (DDQ) into the dinaphthacenes 2 and 3 respectively. The photodimerization of naphthacene might involve the intermediacy of one or two excimers, but their fluorescence has not been detected so far in fluid solution.
