The addition of o-halobenzoic acids to active internal alkynes proceeds efficiently in the presence of CuCl2 as a catalyst to give the corresponding isocoumarin derivatives in moderate to good yields. This strategy offers a simple, efficient route to synthesis of the isocoumarin derivatives.

AbstractThe 13C NMR spectra of isocoumarin, N‐methyl‐1(2H)‐isoquinolinone and 14 of their 3‐ and/or 4‐substituted derivatives were measured and assigned with the aid of various spectral techniques. The values of the one‐bond and some of the long‐range 13C‐13C‐1H coupling constants are reported. The effect of substitution on the 13C chemical shifts is discussed.

Efficient and environmentally benign heterocyclization of o-halobenzoic acid and alkyne has been developed using [bmIm]OH as green catalyst. This methodology offers a metal and base free approach and is endowed with mild reaction conditions, high yields and better functional group tolerating ability.
