A general synthetic route to 4'-alkyl-4-cyano-2'3'5'6' tetrafluorobiphenyls has been developed and used to prepare compounds with unbranched alkyl chains ranging from 4 to 8 carbon atoms. The compounds were characterised by 19F 13C and 1H NMR spectroscopy.
