The present invention provides lipophilic fluorescent chromophores which are suitable for use as tracer dye in lipophilic liquids, for example in leak detection applications. The lipophilic fluorescent chromophores have been provided in different shades like green, greenish-yellow, yellow, orange and red. The use of fluorescent dyes is preferred as they have a much better visibility than their conventional countertypes, especially when exposed to ultraviolet light or also better to broad spectrum lamps. The presented chromophores contains at least one substituent at least part of which extends from the planar aromatic chromophore part, the ratio of the number of atoms (no H-atoms) in the molecule forming part of non planar substituents to the number of atoms (no H-atoms) forming part of the planar aromatic chromophore structure being at least 0.75.
