    Smoke derived karrikinolide and trimethylbutenolide exerted neuroprotective effects against monoamine oxidase and acetylcholinesterase. Synthesis of potent analogs was achieved. Sulphur substitution in the bicyclic ring structure of KAR(1) displayed the most encouraging activity returning IC50 values of 13.75 +/- 0.001 mu M and 0.03 +/- 0.02 mu M for monoamine oxidase A and B and 0.08 +/- 0.006 mu M for acetylcholinesterase. Neuroprotective butenolides may be particularly useful in the treatment of depressive disorders, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

    A methacrylic resin composition having high heat resistance, excellent birefringence, and excellent heat stability and molding processability is provided. A methacrylic resin composition comprises: a methacrylic resin including a structural unit (X) having a cyclic structure-containing main chain, the structural unit (X) being at least one type selected from the group consisting of an N-substituted maleimide monomer-derived structural unit, a glutarimide-based structural unit, and a lactone ring structural unit; and an organic phosphorous compound, wherein a glass transition temperature is more than 120° C. and 160° C. or less, a content of a phosphorus element is 10 mass ppm to 1000 mass ppm, and a ratio P3/P5 of an integral value P3 of a spectral peak assigned to trivalent phosphorus to an integral value P5 of a spectral peak assigned to pentavalent phosphorus in 31P-NMR measurement is 0.2 to 5.0.

    Provided are a methacrylic resin having high heat resistance, highly controlled birefringence, and excellent color tone and transparency, and a production method, a molded article, and an optical or automotive component of the methacrylic resin. The methacrylic resin includes N-substituted maleimide monomer-derived structural units (B) in a main chain thereof in a proportion of 5 mass % to 40 mass %. The N-substituted maleimide monomer-derived structural units (B) include a structural unit represented by formula (1). The methacrylic resin has a glass transition temperature of higher than 120° C. and not higher than 160° C. The content of components that exhibit light absorption at a wavelength of 400 nm in methanol-soluble content of the methacrylic resin is more than 0 mass % and not more than 2 mass % as calculated in terms of N-phenylmaleimide.
