An Improved process for producing an ethylene copolymer, wherein a comonomer copolymerizable with ethylene is copolymerized with ethylene under a pressure of 500 to 3000 kg/cmZ and at a temperature of 100 to 350°C, using an initiator in the presence or absence of a chain transfer agent. A grease containing a polymerization inhibitor is filled into packings and gaps of a retainer of an ultrahigh-pressure pump for copolymerization. The comonomer and ethylene are partly or wholly mixed together under an elevated pressure, and are introduced into the reactor. Thus, the copolymer does not leak from the packings of the pump, the conduit is not clogged, and the pump is prevented from breaking, thus enhancing operation efficiency. Further, since the copolymer sufficiently diffuses into ethylene gas, a high-quality polymer containing small amounts of gel can be produced, while permitting the reaction to be easily controlled and to be stably carried out.
