There is disclosed a process for the modification of a polymer having pendant halo-benzyl groups comprising
(a) contacting said polymer with a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium salt and an alkali ionizable molecule containing anti-degradant properties thereafter,
(b) contacting the resultant mixture with an alkaline compound.

There is disclosed a process for the modification of-a monomer comprising contacting said monomer with an alkali ionizable molecule containing chemical functionality in the presence of a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium salt and thereafter contacting the resultant mixture with an alkaline compound. The resulting functionalized monomer can then be polymerized without purification to yield a polymer that contains a covalently bonded functionality.
Scorch (the premature cross-linking of an elastomer) is a problem that is often encountered in carboxylated rubbers. Salts of certain succinic acid derivatives can be used to greatly improve the scorch resistance of carboxylated rubbers. These salts can be distributed throughout a carboxylated rubber using any procedure that will result in a thorough mixing to form a rubber composition with improved scorch resistance.

@ This invention is directed to the preparation of polymerizable monomers that are prepared from 1-(1-isocyana- to-1-methylethyl)-3-(1-methylethenyl) benzene (m-TMI) and 1-(1-isocyanato-1-methylethyl)-4-(1-methylethenyl) benzene (p-TMI). The monomers prepared from m- and p-TMI can contain numerous chemical moieties, and when polymerized, produce polymers that have chemically bonded to the polymeric backbone the functional moiety. More specifically, these TMI derived monomers may contain chain breaking antioxidant moieties, peroxide decomposing antioxidant moieties, ultraviolet stabilizing moieties, triplet quenching moieties, and other chemical moieties that are useful in polymers.

A vulcanizable composition which comprises diene rubber, an EPDM that has been modified to crosslink with the diene rubber, and a polymeric antidegradant, while being substantially free of staining antidegradants. This composition has particular utility in the sidewalls of tires.
